Video Poker And Slots – The Same But Different

Slot games and video poker are inherently similar, and even appear in a similar housing in real world casinos. The two games are also the most commonly played in almost every available online casino. But, don’t be fooled, there are a few reasons that make the two games fundamentally different.

Let’s take a look at why video poker and slot games, although seeming extremely similar, offer different play experiences.

Video Poker Basics

Video poker is a game, as the name suggests, based around the well known rules of five stud, or seven stud, poker. The player is dealt cards, and must make a decision, based on the value of the cards in a poker hand, as to which to hold and which to exchange. In real world video poker selecting which cards to hold is done via pressing buttons, while online video poker allows the player to simply touch the card to be held, if using a touchscreen, or click it if playing on a laptop or PC.

Once the discarded cards have been replaced, the player will have a hand of a certain value, and be paid out according to that value. Video poker generally pays out for all hands with a value of a pair of Jacks or above. The higher the value of the hand, the higher the payout. The most valuable hands will payout a large amount that can be seen as a jackpot.

Slot Games

Slot games, as is well known, involve a number of reels that are set into motion, once the player has made a bet and selected the spin option. If symbols on the reels land in a matching sequence, payouts are made out, depending on the value of the symbols. Once can already see that the two games are very similar.

Some types of slot games allow the player to raise or lower the bets, which unlocks pay lines. The more paylines active, the more chances of matching sequences being achieved. Other slot games, however, simply have all paylines active all the time, meaning that player does nothing but select spin, and hope for the best. Online slots Canada gaming enthusiasts and indeed, slots fans across the globe, will easily be able to find slots that offer the paylines and betting limits they prefer, due to the enormous number of these games on offer.

Differences

Video poker offers a much more interactive experience, and there is benefit to be had by a player that understands poker, and has a good grasp of the likelihood of certain cards being dealt. In fact, a skilled poker player can make a good, consistent amount of money playing the game.

Slots games, however, are based very largely on luck. There is nothing at all that can influence the symbols, or how they land in sequence on the reels. The only real level of interactivity is raising or lowering the number of active paylines, or the bet itself.

Hence; the biggest difference between the games is that video poker is much more focused around skilful play, while slot games are much more about being lucky. Both games, however, are certainly a great deal of fun and very entertaining experience, leaving the decision about which to play as a matter of personal preference.
